In the beginning were words
lots and lots and lots of words,
omnipresent, overabundant, overflowing,
telling of ancient stories, present thoughts,
and prayers for the future.
Then the talk of love grew quieter,
though still excited with recognition
that a new creation
had been called forth
where once was nothing.
Now, years later, words fade,
drifting back into the great silence
out of which all language and love come,
with the recognition
that words fail to convey
that which simply is,
embodied in shared experiences—
long giggles of delight,
a quiet dinner, a glancing touch—
profound adoration.
